Are Doggy Doors generally safe and burglary proof?

I want to get a doggy door installed from my Yorkie in the sliding glass door. Are Doggy Doors generally safe in terms of being burglar proof? I have an alarm system as well… Considering my dog is all of 4 pounds, I am guessing any thief that wants to come in through there would have to be a midget.

dog door are not safe but see if you can get one the ONLY OPENS WHEN YOUR DOG IS CLOSE TO THE DOOR
(a little key on your dog - when it clomes close to the door - the door becomes open)

- serously they are not

That depends. We had a doggie door that was huge, and we might as well have left the door open. If I forgot my keys, I would just crawl through the door, lol. There are certain dog doors that you can purchase that only open when the dog is in front of it. It has a "remote" that you can attach to their collars. This also keeps other small animals, such as raccoons, out of your house. Good luck! :)

Well, usually on doggy doors, at night after the dog goes out, there is a little lock on the inside if your really worried about it.

I am assuming that they are burglar proof, considering that their hips would have to be about 4 inches wide if they wanted to break in. I dont know of anyone under the age of 1 (maybe) with that amount of hip.

I believe it would be fine if you got it hooked up to the alarm system, but this could get annoying with the dog going in and out. I've seen doggy doors where the door almost locks shut like a door, and you put a magnet sensor on the dog or something like that and as soon as he/she goes to the door it opens. And you never know how a burglar will get in, they only have 2 things on their mind, get in and don't get caught.
All the best-

If you get the small size, you should be fine.

Same as another poster, my ex and I had one once that was huge. I'd crawl through it when I'd locked myself out.

NOOOO unless you shut it at night and when you leave…if i couldnt get in my mamaws house while she was gone (i didn't have a key and she didn't mind that i got in) i just to crawl through the doggy door. and it was a small door…i just squeezed through it!

If you had a doggy door around here you would also have a house full of raccoons, field mice, possibly a fox or two and maybe even a coyote.

Oh and I forgot the skunks, how could I forget the skunks ;)

if you are getting the patio door sliding door insert you will need to adjust the alarm door contact accordingly for your alarm - and of course no burglar could fit through the yorkie sized door - they are easier to kick out - they are typically aluminum…however if a burglar wants in - he can get in (with a rock, through the any glass etc) its all a matter of motivation…

I use to have a large doggy door when I lived in San Diego. The neighborhood kids could get in that one and I had some stuff stollen. They all knew my dogs, so it was very easy for them to get in. Do I have a doggy door now–NO. I would get the neighborhood cat coming in too, which I didn't care, he was a sweet cat and my dogs didn't bother him.

The thing is even with an alarm system, if someone was to break into our house, they are going to get in if you have the alarm or not. I am sure they have all figured out how to get in. Some kids crawled into my mom's house thru a doggy door big enough for a sheltie. So it wasn't all that big. They didn't steal anything, but they played on the computer and watched TV, very weird. They had to scale a big block wall. She moved here and does she have a doggy door-NO.

It's very convinient for us to have them and I loved it. A neighbor had one for their husky, and he placed a motion sensor right above it.

I rather go outside with my dogs. This way I can monitor them. You would **** to think if someone got into your backyard and stoled your little Yorkie.
